Back from Newfoundland

Hey everyone!
Here is my official update on our trip to Newfoundland and Corrina's second Cochlear Implant Surgery.

Here's the Short version:
Corrina is well.
Surgery went great.
People took good care of us.

More details below!

Corrina's surgery went really well. She was calm going in and coming out, the surgeon said everything went perfectly, and she is healing up super fast. Anyone who knows Corrina knows that she's a very active little girl not even having a hole drilled in her head or having something poked into her brain can slow her down for long!

Newfoundland is a beautiful place, full of colour and character at every turn. We didn't get to see much more than a few blocks of the downtown (we all got the flu and were kinda stuck indoors! Ew!) but I got a glimpse of the ocean and the harbour and that's good enough for me.

The family we were staying with opened their home to us just because we were fellow believers and they knew we could use the help. They had never met us (and barely knew anything about us) but after reading an email and hearing our story, they welcomed us with open arms. The local church was just as generous, and the doorbell was constantly ringing as people dropped off baked goods and dinners and supplies. It was amazing to see God moving though so many people to bless my family, and I encourage all of us to be as willing to move and act when God leads us!

Corrina will start to hear out of her second ear on Dec 19th, and I believe that will make her the first Manitoban to have 2 cochlear implants. This second ear will help Corrina hear more of the world around her, improve her speech recognition, allow her to localize sound for the first time, and help her to hear more when there is background noise or other distractions.

Thank you everyone for your prayers and support through this difficult time. We are so thankful to the Lord for giving us a church family that loves and supports us so much! If you'd like to see more about Cochlear Implants, there's a brief animation below (just click on the picture).

Thanks!
-Dave

NO YOUTH this Saturday

Hey everyone,

I’ve been looking at my weekend schedule and I have to postpone Youth for this weekend. I’m working almost the ENTIRE weekend, Janie needs my help at home, and I think I’m getting sick.

Instead, we will have our CHANCE THE WORLD event (and I mean that) on SATURDAY, NOV 3, 7pm at the church. Be sure to be there, ‘cause it’s really going to be cool.

Hope this doesn’t mess up your plans.

Back to SCHOOOOL + Event

DONT MISS:
Back to School YOUTH EVENT
7:00pm, Saturday 8th at the church

Lots of phrases in the English Language hold a lot of punch. If you ever hear someone say something like, “I love you” or see a label that says, “Warning: Contents Explosive”, then you’re pretty likely to have an emotional response. But there’s always been one phrase that tops them all: Back to School.

Back to School means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Some of you are probably excited; some of you, not so much (some of you are angry for me even bringing up the phrase before the absolute last minute necessary!). But whatever your reaction, one thing is certain: You’re going back, and that means you’ve got a choice to make. How are going to act in school this year? Who are your friends going to be? Who are YOU going to be?

The thing with high school is, you can pretty much be whoever you want. You can decide if you’re a super student, an athlete, a party animal, whatever. You choose who you are everyday by the things you do and don’t do. So here’s a question: what about your faith? Does your faith have anything to do with who you are at school?

God calls us to be his followers seven days a week, 24/7. Not just on Sundays or not just at home. Now I’m not saying you need to run around the halls yelling at people for not going to church (that would be a bad thing) but I am challenging you guys to be a Christian in your own way in your halls and in the classroom. What does that look like? Maybe it’s loving people the way Jesus did (without judging them or belittling them). Maybe its being helpful or volunteering somewhere. Maybe it’s stopping some behaviour that your know you shouldn’t be into. Or maybe it’s just a wiliness to talk about your faith if it comes up in conversation, rather than just sitting quietly or changing the subject. Hey, maybe it’s just inviting friends to come to Youth!

School can be a scary, awful, stressful place, but it can also be amazing, encouraging and even fun. Whatever it is, whatever you do, I hope and pray that you have a fantastic year at school. If you need help around your school this year, either with a volunteer thing or with your homework or whatever, let me know. I’d love to help if I can.

-Dave Colvinson, Holy Trinity

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” Colossians 3:23

PS> Here’s one thing to consider. “See You at the Pole” happens at almost every campus in the country on Wednesday, Sept 26th. Students gather around their flag poles to pray for their schools. Can you do that? Can you stand in a circle with others (maybe even STRANGERS) and ask God to do good stuff in your school?

Back in Action!

Edit:
Make sure you check your Facebook Invitations for a Possible Camping overnighter! Didn't get an invite? How rude! Just let me know.

Hey Everyone! I'm back from vacation and I'm better than ever! (Or, at the very least I'm no worse than I was before). It's been a while since I've seen hardly any of you youth-group type people, so I'm officially requesting the PRIVILEGE of your company sometime between now and the start of school. Whether its fries, coffee, a movie, or whatever, I'd like the chance to catch up with YOU and find out how your summers been. So let me know by cell, facebook, blog or ol' fashioned email and we'll set it up. Because I like you guys, and I've missed all y'all!

Love Winnipeg is an effort by local churches to love the people of our city without any strings attached! So this Saturday we're starting off by baking a MOUNTAIN of cookies for local fire fighters just to say "thanks". We'll start at 6:30 at the church. New comers always weclome.

NOTE: This is to confirm that YES we are having youth this week, Thursday at 7:30 and Saturday at 6:30.
-See you soon!

Greetings everyone

Me and the family are back in Winnipeg now and trying to get back up on our feet. Everything with Corrina and her surgery went very well, but we are all still quite tired from the whole expereince. So in order to best support my family at this time, I'm going to send the next few nights at home with Janie and Corrina. This means that there will be no youth group this Thursday or Saturday.

I know that it's been a while since we met and I really miss you all, but we'll starting things up again next week (Thursday May 24 and Saturday May 26) for sure. Thank you very much in advance for your patience and respect.

Thanks again for all your prayers for Corrina and her surgery. It was very obvious to us taht everyone really cared about us and it was just such a big help.

Thank you again,
-Dave

Corrina!

Hey all,

Just in case you haven't heard, Corrina is doing really really well. Her surgery all went great, the hospital was great, the staff were amazing, and everything is good. Corrina recovered SO quickly and so well that within hours of her operation she was running up and down the hallways of the hospital (with me dragging her IV stand behind her)!

Now we're back on my parent's farm for a little R&R. Thank you thank you thank you for all your prayers, support, and understanding. There's no youth this week or next, but I'm sure you knew that.

Thanks again,

Dave, Janie and Corrina

Art Night

You should already know by now, but this Saturday night at Holy Trinity is for the artisit in you! We're going to take some time to be a little creative and have some fun as well! There will be painting, drawing, even some sculpting, and maybe more. All supplies are provided although if you want to bring something special you're more than welcome.

This might be a good event to invite a friend out to for the first time. Most of our events are loud and high-energy, but this week's gonna be a little more mellow. Do you know anyone who fits that category and might enjoy somthing like that? See if they can come!

And please don't be shy. You may not consider yourself much of an "artist" but I believe that anyone can be creative and make something original.

Youth Quake was....

Hey there, Quake Team!

Coming soon: Youth Quake Photos!

It was one week ago today that we left for a weekend I can't stop thinking about! It's taken me a few days to catch my breath (and to catch up on missed sleep!) but I wouldn't want it any other way! I hope you had as good a time as I did, because I thought Youth Quake was amazing! And what was my favourite part? Was it the laser tag? Was it the concerts? Was it beating Kirk in the Inflatables TWICE? Was it the Galloping? Was it the food? Not a chance! My favourite part was spending the time with each one of you youth, hanging out with you, praying with you, being silly and rediculous with you, and getting to know you that much better. You guys are amazing, and I was totally blessed by each one of you this weekend (and if you know me well enough, you know I'm not just saying that).

What was your favourite part? What memories did you make? How did you meet with God? Did you have a favourite song that we sang? What do you want to do now? Please leave a comment and let everyone know. I think we found something really amazing this weekend, and I don't want to lose it!

-Dave

PS> I'm writing an article for the next Trinity Newsletter and I'd LOVE to include a story from you guys. You can email me or just leave your story in the comments section. (Yes Graham, I am begging for comments again. So what!)

Youth Quake Team:

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Quake Team meeting on Thursday!

As promised, here is your take-home challenge for the week:

This Thursday, Jan 25, we'll be looking at a bible passage together, so I'd like you to read it yourself ahead of time. Read it, think about it, and we'll look at it together on Thursday. The passage is Phillipians 1. Don't worry, it's short (like, less than a page). If you want, you can read it online by following this link.

Also, if you could have your forms filled in, that'd be FANTASTIC.

Thanks again for your dedication! This is going to be Grrrrrrr-REAT!
-Dave

(sorry I didn't post this earlier, but MAN have I been sick!)

Youth Quake!!!!

Thanks to everyone who came to our Youth Quake Pizza Party on Thursday! For those of you who missed it, here are the details:

I am taking a Team of youth to Youth Quake '07, a giant Christian youth retreat on Feb. 23-25. In order to qualify for this event, youth must:

1. Come to our Quake Team meetings, Thursdays at 7:30pm at the Church, starting Jan 18th
2. Attend weekly church services - I'd suggest the 9:45 service at Holy Trinity
3. Fill out a registration form, availble at Quake Team meetings.
(a minimum number of meetings and church services is required)

So instead of paying over $150 for this event, youth who want to attend are going to pay in time and dedication. I asked the youth who came on thursday and they agreed that this was fair.

If you are planning to join the Quake team and come with us to Youth Quake '07, or if you still have questions, please let me know.

Don't forget to check out the Official Youth Quake site,

Some of you have birthdays coming up, some of you have Driver's Ed, and some of you are thinking that there's nothing coming up that's worth getting out of bed for. This is always an interesting time of year, because some people are still high on Christmas Spirit and others are crashing hard and full of Bah-humbugs.

So this is an oppertunity to tell your story. What do you think about January? How was your Chirstmas? Your New Years? Are you excited about school, or horrified? Do you have the January Buzz, or the Winter Blahs?
